The History of GSG

In 1992-1993, a student referendum was introduced because there was a proposed increase for all students, undergraduate, and graduate, in a student center fee. Graduate students felt they were being asked to pay an increase without any say or representation. No graduate student entity existed at the time.

The GSA came about because a group of dedicated full-time and part-time graduate students rallied together to address their concerns and to create a forum for graduate students. The graduate students formed the Graduate Student Association (GSA) and the referendum was put to a vote and passed, instituting a student center fee.

GSA eventually became the Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA) to acknowledge the inclusion of the School of Law. In approximately 2011-2012, the GPSA decided to change the title of the organization to the Graduate Student Government (GSG). The inclusion of the word “government” helped to establish that the organization is a government body.
